NOCHEZTLI, EL COLOR SAGRADO

Video Mapping – Filux Lab

FACHADA DEL PALACIO DE BELLAS ARTES

Juárez esq. Eje Central

Semblanza Pieza

The piece “Nocheztli, the sacred color,” is a six minute long mapping based on Red Cochineal, the next exhibition of the Fine Arts Palace. The goal of the piece is to achieve the acknowledgement given to the pigment in the artistic use for almost 300 years in the history of human kind. Breeding cochineal is done in a farm in the Castile cactus, which is migrated to the nests to different prickly cactus centers and then the offspring is tossed out of it leaving the eggshell of the female, which is the ideal red to generate the red 004. Its use during the Prehispanic age was a tribute and its main location was Oaxaca, Puebla and Tlaxcala. It was used in codex, rituals and also had economic ends, using elements with this pigment gave notes of power and wealth, and it was also used for medicinal purposes.

It had great importance in commerce after the conquest, it was exported to European and Asian countries due to its great success in the textile industry, and we shall present these applications and others in its extended range of color, which goes from red, to pink and purple for example. Its main trade was within markets and after it was exported, different recipes were used to prepare the pigment. When synthetic and artificial colors came along, the demand decreased and the generalization of painting in a tube left the prestige and mystical past of the Mexican Red behind.

We shall present the basic color composition, its chemical structure, as well as the ecosystem of Red 004 itself. The process shall be treated, as well as its commercial relevance. The artistic use of pigment will be let known in the Prehispanic Mexico, ranging from Novo Hispanic Art, Impressionism, Asian, European and in general different art flows.

The game with space architecture shall be seen through different color impulses.
